Luke 22:21-34
1. Vs 21-23 Judas’ betrayal- what a sobering reality that a person can be that close to the truth and still miss it. Sharing the table with someone is particularly intimate and shows a deep bond. How can Judas be held responsible for something predetermined by God? This doesn’t mean that Judas didn’t have decision making power in this. God’s foreknowledge does not mean He caused Judas’ actions. He stands outside of time. Judas is part of Satan’s plan and God’s counter plan. Proximity isn’t enough. We need personal relationship with God.
2. Vs 24-27 Status in the Kingdom- in Jewish culture rank in status could be viewed by the seating arrangement at a meal. Instead of the disciples’ response being “I hope the traitor isn’t me” they are full of pride and they start accusing each other and jockeying for position and rank. Jesus had just finished shining a light on and denounces the religious leaders who want recognition and he points out a humble widow and Jesus applauds her. He preaches about how hard following Him would be. He then washes the disciples feet as an example of humility. The tone deafness of the disciples is shocking. It is sad that the world often far outshines the church in servanthood (even if their motives are self serving).
3. Vs 28-30 A role in the Kingdom- to the degree that the disciples selfishness is off the charts, Jesus’ love and mercy is even more off the charts. Because the apostles were faithful they are being handed back the original commission of humanity in creation. Ephesians 2:4-6 We also have a role and elevation. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 We will reign with Jesus. We have an eternal roll in the Kingdom if we stay faithful to Jesus. Your struggle doesn’t disqualify you. Psalm 103:11-14 God knows we are frail.
4.Vs 31-34 Grace before he needed it- we all push back on the truth about us when it isn’t flattering. Peter thinks they are marching into Jerusalem with swords tomorrow. Peter was confident that he knew his own heart. Jesus isn’t shaming or scolding Peter. He is planting the seed of forgiveness before Peter even needs it. Satan enters Judas, but Jesus prays for Peter when Satan wants him. Isn’t this unfair? No evil thing cannot force itself into you without your cooperation even if you don’t realize what you are messing with. Jesus prayer for Peter has to do with the posture of Peter’s heart compared to the posture of Judas’ heart. Jesus tells Peter that he will have position in the church, but it was going to be harder than he could imagine. It wasn’t going to be filled with cushiness like they all imagined. Both Judas and Peter messed up, but Peter repented and had a heart that longed for Jesus. Restoration is God’s heart. Your value to the kingdom of God is not determined by your past or future failures.
