Luke 6:12-16, 10:1-4 Jesus had lots of followers, more than just the 12 apostles. We can infer that Matthias was one of them. 

Acts 2 Peter stood up with the eleven. Matthias was there. 

Acts 6:1-7 Matthias was part of the establishment of the church. 

What is an Apostle?

Greek apóstolos: one who is sent. 

Not synonymous with disciple. 

Disciples Talmud:

-memorized at early age

-only the best

-approached the Rabbi

Apostles

-not outwardly qualified 

-Jesus sought them out

John 20:21 sent

12 is significant. It mimics the 12 tribes of Israel. The apostles fulfilled what Israel were meant to be. They brought Christ to the nations.
